Our Approach: Taking Control of Your Healthcare

Not Even an Ounce of Prevention

Due to our lack of preventive care, we have a growing problem of chronic disease in this country. One in two Americans (125 million) suffer from one or more chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, pulmonary disease, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke. These account for 7 of every 10 deaths (1.7 million) each year!

Hunch vs. Science

Only 20–25% of medical decisions are based on scientific evidence. Moreover, in medical conditions where the right care is known, we don't always get it. For example, if you have diabetes you should be receiving a skin exam, eye exam, and blood sugar test every six months. Currently, only 42% of diabetics receive such tests.

People with chronic diseases represent all segments of society. More than 75% of people with chronic conditions are under the age of 65, while 80% of senior Americans live with at least one chronic disease and 50% have two! In the Medicare population, the average beneficiary sees over seven different physicians and fills upwards of 15 medications! Since the population of Americans 65 and older is expected to double in the next 25 years, we must not only make sure people with chronic diseases receive the right care, but also do something to prevent chronic disease from happening in the first place.

The Problem with Over-Specialization

So, how did we get in such a mess? The U.S. healthcare system today is over-specialized. The primary care doctor plays a prominent role in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease, but there are too few of them to go around. As a result, people are not getting coordinated care among the various providers and service settings.

If the trend continues, over the next 25 years we will have a severe shortage of primary care physicians. Who will manage our care and the care of our loved ones as we get older?
